Hazardous weather outlook issued for much of eastern N.D., northwestern Minnesota

The National Weather Service office in Grand Forks has issued a hazardous weather outlook for parts of eastern N.D. and west / northwest Minnesota.

Today a band of light snow from Pembina to Crookston to Park Rapids will move slowly to the east. Additional accumulation is anticipated to be one inch or less. Patchy dense fog is expected through mid-morning and will decrease visibility down to one quarter of a mile.

Starting Saturday, a mixture of rain, snow and freezing rain is expected. Roads are likely to become slick in spots. Motorists planning to travel over the New Years' weekend should pay close attention to the forecast and travel conditions.

The extended forecast:

Today: A 30 percent chance of snow before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. North northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tonight: A chance of rain or freezing rain after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. South wind between 7 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of rain or freezing rain before noon, then a chance of snow and freezing rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. South wind 9 to 18 mph becoming northwest. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday night: A 20 percent chance of snow after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. Blustery, with a northwest wind between 21 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

New Year's Day: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 22. Windy, with a north northwest wind between 23 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph.

Sunday night: Partly cloudy and blustery, with a low around 4.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 13.

Monday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 7.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 28.
