The mayor and former fire chief of Hallock, Minn., died Sunday in a vehicle rollover about two miles west of Hallock.
Kim Turner, 51, was driving a pickup truck east on Minnesota State Highway 175 about 8:30 p.m. when he lost control and rolled into the south ditch, according to the State Patrol.
Turner was elected mayor of Hallock in 2004. Before that, he served several years as the city's fire chief and was instrumental in the recovery effort after a tornado devastated Hallock's south side, including its fairgrounds, in 1995.
He also played a key role in the recovery after the Flood of 1997 and in the search for Julie Holmquist, who turned up missing in 1998 and whose body was found weeks later near Lancaster, Minn.
"Whenever Kim stepped into things, Kathi (his wife) was right there with him every step of the way," said Jim Johnson, a family friend and a former mayor of Hallock. "They were just really dedicated to the community."
