Grand Forks woman wins prestigious Bush Foundation fellowship

A Grand Forks woman has won a prestigious fellowship, awarded by the Bush Foundation, that will provide her with up to $100,000 over the next two years to learn and grow as a leader.

A Grand Forks woman has won a prestigious fellowship, awarded by the Bush Foundation, that will provide her with up to $100,000 over the next two years to learn and grow as a leader.

Robin David, founder of the Global Friends Coalition and the associate director of UND's honors program, won the grant alongside 24 other recipients from North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota and their Native American nations, winnowed from a field of more than 750.

David, whose work with Global Friends has focused on integrating new Americans in Grand Forks, said she plans to attend national immigration conferences as well as executive education conferences around the country. She wants to better learn how to "pull together large community groups" on issues like refugee resettlement and hopes to shift more from nonprofit leadership, like her role with Global Friends, into a broader "community leadership" role.

"I was in disbelief for the first couple of weeks, really," David said of receiving the award, which was announced last month. "I just keep coming back to the word 'thrilled.'
