A Grand Forks woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed her former boyfriend in the chest with a pen, according to court documents.
The victim survived but emergency room staff told police he suffered, among other things, a collapsed lung.
If convicted of attempted murder, Toni Althea Foote, 22, would face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years in prison.
As of Wednesday evening, Altru Hospital said it did not have a patient with the victim’s name.
The alleged stabbing happened early Saturday morning at 1702 Fourth Ave. N., a home shared by Foote, her ex-boyfriend and two roommates.

Police were called to the Altru emergency room around 2:10 a.m. after the victim was brought in. ER staff and the other roommates told investigators the victim told them that Foote stabbed him. But there were no witnesses to the stabbing, which allegedly happened in the bedroom that Foote still shared with the victim.
ER staff said it was possible the victim was stabbed with a small knife rather than a pen, and police were looking for the weapon, according to court documents. The two roommates told police there is a history of domestic violence between Foote and the victim.
Foote is being represented by David N. Ogren of the state Public Defender’s Office.
She made an initial appearance in state district court in Grand Forks on Monday, where the court imposed a no-contact order with the victim and set bail at $50,000 cash or surety.
As of Wednesday evening, Foote remained in the Grand Forks County jail.
