The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department said Friday it plans to officially open its new water operations center next Wednesday.

The 26,000-square-foot operations center is at 5205 Gateway Drive, Grand Forks, with room for rescue equipment and classrooms. Also in the center is a new memorial to drowning victims in the area and efforts by rescuers.

It will be named after Guy Miller, a Minto, N.D., man washed away by floodwater last spring. Miller’s family and friends donated funds to help the department buy a cabinet and plaque.

The department has invited Miller’s family along with the families of Anthony Kuznia and Delano Gaking to the opening. Kuznia, 11, drowned in the Red River in August, and Delano Gaking, 19, drowned in the Red River in 2010.
