In Grand Forks and across North Dakota schools made moves to cope with the heat, which has been building in schools for several days.
Grand Forks schools will let out early today and Wednesday to avoid the worst of the expected heat. Elementary schools will close at 1 p.m., middle schools at 1:30 p.m. and high schools at 12:55 p.m.
Lunch will be served earlier because of the shortened days. Afternoon Head Start and early childhood special education classes were canceled.
A district wide decision about Thursday and Friday schedules will be announced Wednesday morning.
In Fargo, five elementary schools will remain closed through Wednesday, according to Superintendent Jeff Schatz. School officials will evaluate the temperature situation Wednesday to determine whether additional cancellations are prudent, he said.

The heat caused school closings in the Twin Cities as record heat spread across Minnesota.
Alexandria set a record of 94. The old record of 93 was set in 1976. Red Wing hit 97, and even northern Minnesota was sweltering, with Grand Rapids reporting 91 and Duluth 89.
