GRAND FORKS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Applications flow in for superintendent job

With a Jan. 3 deadline approaching, applications for the Grand Forks Public School District superintendent position are coming in from everywhere, except North Dakota.

With a Jan. 3 deadline approaching, applications for the Grand Forks Public School District superintendent position are coming in from everywhere, except North Dakota.

Of eight applications turned in to consultants at Ray and Associates Inc., only one is from North Dakota, according to Joe Scalzo, of Ray and Associates.

"A lot of times in North Dakota, the applicants in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota don't submit their applications until the last couple days in order to keep it secret," Scalzo said.

The lone North Dakota applicant is Roger Abbe of Grand Forks, but more local and regional applications are expected before the deadline.

Abbe has a background in education and is employed with the Upper Valley Special Education Unit in Grafton, N.D.

Ron Gruwell has served as interim superintendent for the 2007-08 school year, after the retirement of former superintendent Mark Sanford. Gruwell also serves as the superintendent of secondary education.

Applications for the position have come in from states such as Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona and Ohio, among others, Scalzo said.

A meeting between the consultants and the Grand Forks School Board will take place Jan. 17, at which time the consultants will present the most qualified applicants to the board.
