Grand Forks police arrest suspect after clerk refuses demand for cash

Grand Forks police arrested a man in connection with an attempted robbery at a Gateway Drive gas station Thursday afternoon shortly after a clerk refused his demand for cash.

Grand Forks police arrested a man in connection with an attempted robbery at a Gateway Drive gas station Thursday afternoon shortly after a clerk refused his demand for cash.

According to a police statement, Robert Jay Smith, 22, of Grand Forks, was arrested several blocks from the gas station at 3635 Gateway Drive. Police say he entered the store, demanded money and was refused before leaving the store.

"Employees followed the subject until he was apprehended by officers a few blocks from the scene," the release states. "It is not believed at this time the suspect obtained anything from the convenience store."

Smith, who faces charges of attempted robbery, is being held at the Grand Forks County Correctional Center.
