Organizers of the Uff Da Mud Run in Grand Forks are asking the City Council to allow runners to swim across the Red Lake and Red River as part of the race,

For safety reason, the city banned swimming in the rivers, but race organizers at Extreme North Dakota said there will be lifeguards on paddleboards and kayaks. There will be life jackets for runners who want them.

The mud run is a 5k along the river with obstacles and mud pits. The organizers are known for other water-related activities including a swim marathon on the Red River and adventure races throughout the region. A sister organization runs the new boathouse on the river.

The council’s Service/Safety Committee will consider the request at its meeting at 5:30 Tuesday night at City Hall.
