The Grand Forks woman accused of causing a car accident on Gateway Drive that led to another woman's death pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Grand Forks County District Court to two charges stemming from the crash.

Ebony Nichole Miles, 26, was initially charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident that involved personal injury on Feb. 9 a day after the crash.

On Feb. 16, Florence Umphrey, 63, died as a result of injuries from the crash and on March 9, an additional charge of manslaughter was added against Miles.

Miles is not scheduled to be arraigned on that charge until May 9 and her pretrial conference on the initial charges are scheduled for June 7.

Assistant State's Attorney Carmell Mattison expects the charges will be joined down the road.

According to court documents, at around 5 p.m., Miles pulled her Nissan Maxima from a side street in front of a Ford station wagon driven by Raymond Umphrey, 64, with his wife Florence in the passenger seat.

Umphrey's car, which was traveling west near the 3400 block of Gateway, hit Miles' vehicle and was pushed into another lane, where it struck a second car.

The criminal complaint said Miles had a blood alcohol level of .102 after the crash and was also arrested for possession of marijuana.

Miles allegedly fled the scene but was arrested later near the Budget Inn Express.

She is being held without bond after breaking the terms of her release by drinking.

Manslaughter, in this case, is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Leaving the scene of an accident that involved personal injury is a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
