The temperature in Grand Forks rose past 90 Thursday but fell short of breaking the record for the date.

The National Weather Service recorded a high of 92 degrees Thursday afternoon at its Grand Forks offices. The record high for the day is 96 degrees, set in 1926, said Bill Barrett, a meteorologist-technician with the weather service.

The normal temperature for the day is 65, but it is not unusual to exceed 90 this time of year.

"You'll usually have a day above 90 in May at some point," he said.

The weather service also issued a red flag warning for fire conditions in northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, citing high temperatures, low humidity and winds gusting up 35 mph. That was expected to expire at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Highs should linger in the 70s over the weekend, according to the news service's forecast.
