Grand Forks, N.D. - Severe weather season is in full swing, and the city of Grand Forks has a new shelter.

It has added another safety shelter at Red River High School. The other is located at Noren Hall on UND's campus.

The shelters open once the tornado sirens sound.

The city recommends if at all possible to go to your own basement or a neighbors basement first, but they say the shelters are available if those aren't options.

Peter Steele, Grand Forks Communications Specialist: "We recommend for everybody in Grand Forks to have a plan, know what you're going to do, make sure everybody in your family knows what the plan is then just stay calm and stick to that plan and move as calmly and quickly as possible to safety."

The city also has a text alert system available. Visit  www.grandforksgov.com  or gfcounty.nd.gov to sign up for the weather alerts.
