Firefighters began the new year putting out flames coming from a car parked in an apartment-building garage Tuesday, a press release from the city said.
About 20 firefighters responded to reports of a fire inside a detached garage at Sterling Pointe apartments, 1801 36th Ave. S., around 4:45 p.m., the release said. Flames were spilling from the passenger compartment of a car parked in one of the garage stalls, the release said.
Within 10 minutes firefighters had extinguished the flames and no one was injured.
The blaze caused significant damage to the vehicle and minor damage to the building. Damage is estimated to cost between $20,000 to $25,000, the release said.
Investigators said the flames were caused by an auxiliary heater igniting nearby combustible material, the release said.
