A Grand Forks firefighter is seeking the Democratic-NPL Party’s endorsement for state representative in District 17.

Ed Grossbauer, who works for the city’s fire department and serves as an adjunct instructor at UND, announced his decision Wednesday.

Both House seats in District 17 are held by Republicans, Mark Sanford and Mark Owens. Longtime Republican Sen. Ray Holmberg, who announced his intention to seek re-election Monday, also represents District 17.

In a statement, Grossbauer said he believes “it is time for change - North Dakota families deserve better.”

“We live in a state with over a billion dollars in reserves, yet our representatives will not fund a carton of milk for even the poorest of our children,” he said in the statement, also pointing to what he says are high student loan rates here and a lack of tax relief for renters.

Grossbauer was born and raised in New York state, according to a news release. He is the former president of the Grand Forks Fire Fighters Local 242 and of Professional Fire Fighters of North Dakota. Grossbauer is also a member of the North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance board of directors.

The combined Grand Forks district conventions for the Democratic-NPL Party will be held Saturday morning at Schroeder Middle School.
