Grand Forks County guardsman gets Purple Heart

North Dakota National Guard Staff Sgt. Heith Dokken, originally from Grand Forks County, will receive the Purple Heart at a ceremony at Camp Grafton, N.D., Saturday.

North Dakota National Guard Staff Sgt. Heith Dokken, originally from Grand Forks County, will receive the Purple Heart at a ceremony at Camp Grafton, N.D., Saturday.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple and state adjutant general Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk will present the medal, which is given for U.S. military personnel wounded, killed or killed by wounds in the course of their duty.

Dokken served as a medic during Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Bismarck-based 957th Engineer Company from 2003 to 2004. He was wounded in 2003.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
