Grand Forks City Council members want to hear from you about where polling sites should be.

The council approved a new map redrawing ward boundaries on at a special session Monday, but delayed a decision on voting precincts and where to put polling sites.

Some discussed ways to reduce the number of sites to cut costs.

"I'm glad to thin the herd, and I'd like to thin the herd even more," said Council member Terry Bjerke, who would like to see voting consolidated to one site, such as the Alerus Center.

Other council members have warned they wouldn't want to drastically change polling sites, which could confuse voters or make it too inconvenient.

"Do we want the public looking at this as well as staff," said Council Vice President Eliot Glassheim.

Planner Ryan Brooks said that information on the proposed precincts and polling places would be available on the city's website, www.GrandForksgov.com .

The city needs to redraw its seven wards and give them equal populations following the 2010 Census. A council committee on Dec. 1 already recommended a plan from the Planning Department that expands the northeastern wards with shrinking populations to the southwest. The council gave preliminary approval of that plan Monday.

The council did not take action on another plan from staff to further divide wards into 18 precincts with 13 polling sites.

The council planned to take up the issue again at its Dec. 19 meeting.
