E-cigarettes in Grand Forks will likely be regulated just like regular cigarettes, following a City Council vote Monday.
It will take a second vote to put the law on the books, but the council voted unanimously the first time.
Council member Bret Weber praised the work of anti-tobacco activists and local high school students who urged the city to regulate e-cigarettes so young people cannot buy them.
E-cigarettes use battery-powered heating elements to vaporize a special liquid that can contain nicotine. The vapor is then inhaled like cigarette smoke.

Currently, city law does not address e-cigarettes. The new law would make it illegal to sell them to those younger than 18, just like regular cigarettes.
