A citywide mosquito spray for Grand Forks and East Grand Forks has been scheduled for Thursday night.

The two cities said in a news release workers will spray for mosquitoes 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The announcement comes after West Nile virus was found in two pools of mosquitoes earlier this week in Grand Forks.

Inclement weather or winds higher than 10 mph may result in the spray being suspended until conditions improve.

An aerial mosquito control application for Emerado, ND also has been scheduled for 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday night. If the spray is rescheduled, it will take place the following evening.

These applications are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and the appropriate state departments. They will not harm people, pets or gardens, according to a news release.

Residents may want to stay indoors during the spray and wait to come out until the aerosol cloud dissipates. Anyone who is sensitive to chemicals may want to close their windows during the spraying. Residents should not walk directly through the aerosol cloud behind the insecticide sprayer.

Officials recommend taking extra precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and contracting West Nile. Some precautions include using insect repellent that contains DEET, limiting outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when possible, and eliminate standing water around homes.
