Two graduate students studying the abundance of river otters and fishers in northeastern North Dakota will discuss the project during a program set for 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Icelandic State Park campground amphitheater.
Icelandic State Park is five miles west of Cavalier, N.D., on state Highway 5.
Maggie Triska and Steve Loughry, graduate students at Frostburg State University in Maryland, have been researching the two species, which are naturally repopulating eastern North Dakota for the first time in about 100 years. Steve Pepper, an undergraduate student at Brigham Young University in Idaho, also is working on the project.
As part of Saturday's presentation, the students will offer background information on fishers and otters and share evidence of the species' return, including photos and tracks.
Saturday's amphitheater program is a cooperative effort between the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the state Parks and Recreation Department. There is no fee to attend, and park staff will waive vehicle entry fees for people entering the park just for the presentation.
