BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today issued the following statement upon learning of the death of Arthur A. Link, the 27th governor of the state of North Dakota. In addition, he has directed that the United States and North Dakota flags be lowered to half staff beginning at sunrise on Wednesday June 2, and continuing until sunset on the day of Gov. Link's funeral:
"As a state representative, U.S. Congressman, Governor and engaged citizen of the State of North Dakota, former Governor Art Link embodied the notion of civic responsibility and state pride. Regardless of political affiliation, North Dakotans respected and admired him for his genuine concern for our state and our people.
"For many of us, Governor Link personified North Dakota values on a range of important issues. His deep faith and principled decision-making throughout his long life earned him the respect and affection of all North Dakotans. Among his achievements as Governor, his work for good environmental stewardship has left a lasting legacy on the landscape of North Dakota's reclaimed lands.
"Governor Link never stopped caring or getting involved, well into his senior years. After his terms of public office, he dedicated much of his time as an advocate for the preservation of North Dakota's history. Well into his nineties, he attended events at the State Capitol, where we all enjoyed talking with him.
"On behalf of all North Dakotans, Mikey and I extend our condolences to Governor Link's wife Grace, his children, and his family. We express our deep appreciation for his long and valued service to our state."
