The Grand Forks Police Department is testing a license plate recognition system.
The Mobile Plate Hunter allows officers to capture images of license plates and instantly compare them with millions of records in the police database to identify vehicles of interest. The system alerts the officer of any matches, and once a warrant is confirmed on the suspect vehicle, a traffic stop is ordered.
The system reads an average of 3,500 plates a day from all 50 states and most foreign countries. It also can read alpha-numeric identification systems from 1,500 feet in the air.
The trial period began May 19 and concludes Tuesday. For more information, log on to www.elsagna.com .
