Grand Forks Public Schools plan to name an interim superintendent before hiring a permanent replacement for Mark Sanford.
Sanford will retire as superintendent June 30.
School Board president Mike St. Onge said a superintendent transition committee has compiled a list of 27 district staff members from which to select the interim superintendent. Six of the candidates are preferred for the job, meaning they have superintendent credentials, he said.
St. Onge said the committee plans to name the list of candidates Monday.
To facilitate a nationwide permanent superintendent search, the School Board plans to hire a consulting firm, St. Onge said. The firm is expected to cost the district a base fee of $18,000 to $25,000, he said.

Consultants who have submitted proposals to the district say it will take at least three months to find a permanent replacement. The optimum "superintendent moving season" - January to March - has passed, St. Onge said.
The superintendent transition committee includes School Board members David Helgerson, Tim Lamb, Lyle Hall and Grand Forks Education Association president Karol Nyberg.
