A Grand Forks middle school teacher was discharged from his contract Monday when the School Board finalized his firing with a 7-1 vote.

Cornel Kilber, an industrial technology teacher at Schroeder Middle School, was placed on paid administrative leave Sept. 2. Last month, the board held two special meetings, closed to the public, and passed a motion Oct. 15 that said there was enough evidence that Kilber showed "conduct unbecoming a teacher."

That motion passed by an 8-1 vote, with board member Vicki Ericson casting the lone dissenting vote.

At Monday's meeting, the board went into executive session -- closed to the media and public -- to finalize Kilber's firing. Board members voted 7-1 to pass a motion to discharge Kilber from his contract effective immediately, Superintendent Larry Nybladh said.

"It's the final step in the process under the North Dakota Century Code," Nybladh said.

Ericson cast the only vote against the motion; board member Linda Jenkins was absent from the meeting.
