The National Weather Service office in Grand Forks will host an open house this weekend to give local residents a chance to meet the staff and see what they do every day.

The event will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Forks office, 4797 Technology Circle, which is located just south of University Avenue to the west of Interstate 29. The main parking area will be at the U.S. Department of Agriculture building to the west of the weather service office.

At the open house, several displays and demonstrations will be set up to explain what the staff does on a daily basis to help protect local residents and explain how they issue forecasts.

Attendees also will learn about "Weather Ready Nation," a new nationwide initiative to make America safer by saving more lives and protecting livelihoods during severe weather events.

Participating organizations in the open house include the Salvation Army, Red Cross, U.S. Geological Survey, the North Dakota State Climatologist and UND's Atmospheric Science Department.
