A Grand Forks man accused of beating a 70-year-old woman on the north end of town last summer was in the hospital Thursday for what police say is a meth overdose.
Andrew Moreland, 21, was on his way out a basement window in south Grand Forks on Thursday morning, when Grand Forks police attempted to serve two warrants for arrest on drug charges, according to police.
Other incidents
Moreland was accused last summer of beating 70-year-old Marjorie Bergum in her north-end Grand Forks home and leaving her tied up in the home after threatening her life and the lives of her family members if she told police he'd been there.
Moreland, who was released on bond last fall, now faces drug-related charges.

Moreland was charged with possession of meth and meth-related paraphernalia on March 28. Moreland had about 19 small bags of meth and a glass pipe associated with smoking meth in a Grand Forks hotel room last July, according to court records. Warrants for his arrest were issued last week, after the formal charges were brought against him, according to court records.
Police attempted to make contact with Moreland about 5:30 a.m. Thursday at 1107 18th Ave. S., according to a news release.
When police arrived at the home, Moreland attempted to escape through a basement window. Officers prevented the escape and arrested him on the warrants, according to the press release.
Moreland was taken to Altru Hospital for what police said appeared to be an overdose from an injection of meth, according to the news release. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and will be transported to the jail once he's released from the hospital, according to the news release.
More charges are likely, police said. When Moreland was taken into custody Thursday, he had meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia on him, according to the news release.

Police say the men smashed the front windows of the store and caused even more damage inside before leaving with laptop computers, car stereo equipment and DVD players. A passerby saw the act and called police.
Owner Ed Mooney said he believes they are the same thieves who broke into his store in January, when similar products were stolen.
Police are continuing the investigation.
