Grand Forks city leaders will discuss a ban on texting and driving at the City Council's Safety Committee meeting at 5:30 tonight at City Hall.
City Council President Hal Gershman last week proposed a change in the law to combat what he and other drivers see as the dangerous practice of sending cell phone text messages from behind the wheel.
Some studies have found the distraction of texting to be worse than if a driver were drunk or high on drugs.
The city already has laws criminalizing reckless driving, but texting and driving is not specifically banned. City leaders have not talked of potential penalties.
