They'll be trying to break another record today at the World's Largest French Fry Feed, beginning at 5 p.m. in University Park.

The event is part of Potato Bowl U.S.A., a weeklong annual event teaming UND with the Red River Valley potato-growing industry. It culminates with Saturday's UND vs. Central Washington football game.

Last year, the feed attracted about 10,000 people who consumed about 4,680 pounds of french fries, according to Duane Maatz, chairman of Potato Bowl USA.

This year, Simplot fried 5,200 pounds of french fries for the event, according to Scott Lund, quality assurance manager for potato processor J.R. Simplot, main sponsor of the feed. The company prepared the batch for the feed a week in advance.

The whole process took only 45 minutes, including unloading the potato trucks, washing, peeling, sorting, drying, frying and freezing.

Besides a lot of free french fries, you can expect hot dog and soda stands, games, live music and the United Way children's activity tent.

UND athletes also will be mixing with the crowd.

Registration for the potato picking contest for children begins at 5 p.m.

Fireworks begin at 8:30 p.m., just down University Avenue at Memorial Stadium.
