Frost Fire Park completes downhill mountain bike trail system

The eight mountain bike trails vary in difficulty for riders and have adaptations, such as being able to take a jump or ride around it, based on comfort and skill levels. The opening of the trail system marks an end to the construction phase of the 3-year, $500,000 project.

WALHALLA, N.D. – Work is complete on a new downhill mountain bike trail system at Frost Fire Park in northeast North Dakota, and this weekend will be the first time the public can experience all eight mountain bike trails, park staff said Friday, July 30.

The opening of the trail system marks an end to the construction phase of the 3-year, $500,000 project, according to a news release from Frost Fire Park.

Frost Fire Park contracted Trail Source LLC of Rosemount, Minn., to construct the four remaining trails this summer. The company specializes in building sustainable and environmentally friendly trails and structures that allow people to experience and enjoy nature.

The trails vary in difficulty for riders and have adaptations, such as being able to take a jump or ride around it, based on comfort and skill levels. Trails have twists and turns, bridges and jumps built out of a base of rocks. One of the trails features a retired ski and snowboard trail groomer, adding more personality and reminding people of Frost Fire Park’s winter activities.

“These trails are the real deal,” Patty Gorder, general manager at Frost Fire Park, said in a news release. “The excitement around our downhill mountain bike offerings has built all summer and we’re excited to open the rest of the trails and get riders out here to experience them.”

Downhill mountain bike riders get excited about new places to explore and will often drive hours to experience new trails, Gorder said.

“We can’t wait to welcome people who have never been to Frost Fire Park,” she said. “We also want our regular customers to know we can help them try out something new, and our trails are doable for people who want to try something new or bring the family out.”

As part of this weekend’s grand opening, bike riders can ask for a buy one, get one free on full day chair lift tickets for the downhill mountain bike trails.

The downhill mountain bike trails and chair lift are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Frost Fire Park Also has a fleet of high-end mountain bikes available to reserve; call (701) 549-3600 to reserve a bike. Riders also may bring their own bikes; helmets are required.

Frost Fire Park is located 7 miles west of Walhalla at 11950 County Road 55, in the Rendezvous Region of northeast North Dakota.

All eight downhill mountain bike trails are open each weekend through the end of the fall season at the park, which features a 350-foot vertical drop.
