A Fort Totten, N.D., man was sentenced to 52 months in prison for child abuse and neglect Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Fargo.

Roman Cavanaugh Jr., 36, also must pay $1,488.40 in restitution and a $200 fine to the Crime Victims' Fund.

Cavanaugh pleaded guilty in September for punching his 11- and 12-year-old sons in the face with a closed fist. The older boy also suffered injuries from being choked by Cavanaugh.

In December 2010, authorities had to break a barricade Cavanaugh had put against his door to arrest him and take the children to the hospital.
