The Grand Forks Fire Department says being ready is the key to surviving a house fire.

The department recommends homeowners:

n Install smoke alarms on all levels and outside and inside bedrooms.

n Test the alarms monthly to make sure they're working. Keep fresh batteries handy.

n Plan and practice home fire drills with your family. Everyone should know two ways to get out of every room, be able to open all doors and windows easily, and know where to meet outside.

n If you live in an apartment building, know the fire escape plan, the sound of the fire alarm and where the exits are.

For more fire safety questions, contact Grand Forks Fire Marshal Jerry Vein at (701) 740-6689.

Vein will hold a news conference to discuss fire-safe cigarettes at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Grand Fork City Council chambers. Cigarettes are the leading cause of home fire deaths in the U.S., killing as many as 900 people each year.
