The Grand Forks Fire Department responded to a fire at Ben Franklin Elementary School about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire started in the school's library and was put out by a custodian with a fire extinguisher, according to Terry Brenner, superintendent of Grand Forks Public Schools. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, Brenner said.

"There's a pretty heavy smoke smell," he said, noting that the fire was contained to the library.

Fire department and police staff were unable to provide more details about the fire.

Several neighborhood residents gathered along the street to watch the situation unfold. The school is at 1016 20th St. S.
