BISMARCK - The North Dakota Health Department knows of no problems with Federal Emergency Management Agency fuel tanks in the state.
FEMA is inspecting tanks in 238 U.S. cities, the District of Columbia and Guam. The agency knows of at least 150 underground tanks that need to be inspected for leaks. It also is trying to determine whether 124 other tanks are underground or above ground and whether they are leaking.
Most large underground fuel tanks in North Dakota were required to be upgraded or replaced by December 1998, said Gary Berreth, a state Health Department environmental engineer.
"We had virtually 100 percent compliance with that requirement," he said.
The eight FEMA tanks in question were either removed or replaced with above-ground tanks, Berreth said. He knows of no leaks.
