A Kandiyohi County and FBI investigation began Thursday, just hours after a masked man with a gun robbed a Sunburg bank.

Sheriff Dan Hartog said investigators are actively seeking more information about Thursday’s Lake Region Bank robbery and the suspect behind it.

“We’re just doing some follow-up on the vehicle,” Hartog said Friday, “and talking to other individuals to see if they saw anything.”

Hartog declined to disclose investigation details further in-depth.

“Criminals read the newspaper too,” he said.

Hartog said the Sheriff’s Department is working with the FBI to develop more leads in the case.

It hasn’t been determined whether the robber has any connections with the Sunburg area.

“We’ll hopefully find out more when it comes time we capture the person or persons, and find out from there why they targeted Sunburg,” Hartog said.

The town’s small size could be a reason it was targeted, although the Twin Cities metro experiences a significant amount of bank robberies as well.

According to FBI data, there were nearly 4,000 bank robberies nationwide in 2014. Only 96 of those - or 2 percent - happened in a rural area. In comparison, nearly 2,000 bank robberies occurred in metropolitan areas.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office is still asking anyone with more information about the suspect or robbery to come forward.

A surveillance video image of the perpetrator was posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page Thursday.

“I know it doesn’t show much about the person,” Hartog said. “But in regards to the clothing, if anybody knows somebody that maybe dresses like that... or if they hear anything. If somebody is talking about the robbery, please call us.”
