FARGO - After pleading guilty to felony assault charges on Monday for attacking a 15-year-old boy in a schoolyard, a 25-year-old Fargo man was sentenced to 1½ years of probation.

If Roger Allen Hellerud completes supervised probation without incident, the felony will come off his record because the sentence is a deferred imposition, said Ryan Younggren, an assistant Cass County state's attorney.

Prosecutors had charged Hellerud with aggravated assault in Cass County District Court in connection with the beating near Madison Elementary in late April. Four teens were also referred to juvenile court in the incident.

Hellerud admitted to cops that he hit the 15-year-old boy in the face, according to police reports.

Younggren said Hellerud will also be required to be in treatment while he's on probation. His mother told police Hellerud is mentally ill and can be violent when he's off his medication.
