A Fargo man has been charged with assaulting a police officer after kicking an arresting officer while in the back of a police vehicle in Grand Forks Monday afternoon.

Kevin Jay Hensley, 28, was initially arrested for disorderly conduct after a disturbance around 2 p.m. at Sears in the Columbia Mall.

According to an incident report, after his arrest, Hensley began kicking the police vehicle while being transported to jail, apparently in an attempt to kick out the window.

An officer warned Hensley to stop before trying to restrain Hensley, who continued to kick, pinning the officer's hand on the door. He had to be sprayed with pepper spray before releasing the officer's hand.

A Grand Forks police spokesman said the officer was not seriously hurt.
