Bemidji summer recital series sets records

As the summer comes to an end, only two more recitals will be held this year as part the Bemidji Area Church Musicians Recital Series.

Wayne Hoff, who has performed in the recital series each of its 26 summers, and Carol Johnson will perform on piano and organ at noon Wednesday in Aardahl Lutheran Church, 2920 Van Buren Ave. S.E., Bemidji.

The summer series concludes noon Aug. 28 in First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave., with Sarah Carlson on organ, with Melanie Hanson on violin, Michael Hanson on saxophone and Jon Romer on Native American flute.

The recitals are free; a modestly priced lunch is available.

Coordinator Kenneth Wold said attendance at the Wednesday concerts set records this summer, as did donations, allowing the group to fund three $750 scholarships to music students.

Aglow rally meets in Bemidji

Dean and Cassey Goosen of "Awakening Hope Ministries," in Brainerd, Minn., will present a program, "Empowered by the Father's Hands," 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in Mt. Zion Church, 414 Lincoln Ave. S.E., Bemidji.

Drayton church slates 7th annual Picnic in Park

The Skjeberg Lutheran Church in Kittson County, Minn., will host its seventh annual Picnic in the Park at the city park in Drayton, N.D., beginning at 5 p.m., Aug. 25. Barbecued ribs, hot dogs, corn on the cob and homemade pie served until 7 p.m.; the Popple Ridge Pickers will play into the evening. An offering will be taken to support mission programs. In case of bad weather, it will be held in the Senior Center.

GF church to hold women's Bible studies

Valley Christian Center is accepting registrations through Sunday for two popular Bible studies for women, and all women are welcome.

Beth Moore's study on Daniel, "Words of Prophecy," will be held Tuesday evenings Sept. 3-Nov. 26. A DVD study by author Ann Voskamp, "One Thousand Gifts," will be held 6:30 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 5 to Oct. 10.

Florida pastor to give 'chalk talk' in Buxton

Pastor Ken Thoreson, a singer, songwriter and chalk artist from Sebring, Fla., will present "Parables in Chalk," 7 p.m., Aug. 25, at Ny Stavanger Free Lutheran Church, 720 Neill St. in Buxton, N.D.

Thoreson previously served churches in the Red River Valley and is known for his unusual and dramatic presentations of biblical stories while he completes a colorful chalk drawing.
