Teacher to tell of orphan effort

Jenna Zavoral, East Grand Forks, teaches at Viking Elementary School in Grand Forks. In July, she went to Uganda with "Visiting Orphans."

There are 2.5 million abandoned and orphaned children in Uganda, many of them because of AIDS. Many near Kampala in the south where Zavoral traveled are crowded into "children's prisons," she said. "It was pretty tough."

Some children have special needs and lie on the ground having seizures. Some are starving. Some die of malaria and other illnesses.

"I was just loving and sharing the Gospel with the orphans." She also heard and saw the Atlanta-based Christian ministry "Sixty Feet," which is working to get help for the orphans of Uganda.

"This is a ministry that is doing incredible things and has Jesus written all over it," Zavoral said.

Zavoral and others from the greater Grand Forks community took part in a blog vote, and the founders of Sixty Feet decided to come and show their documentary, "Bereaved," about the wrongfully imprisoned children of Uganda.

Scott Harty and Gary Hill will present the documentary at 7 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 202 Third St. N.W., East Grand Forks, and at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1409 Ninth St. S., Grand Forks. They also will speak at noon Monday at Christus Rex Lutheran Campus Center, in the 3900 block of University Avenue at UND.
