A 59-year-old Excelsior, Minn., man remained hospitalized in Duluth on Sunday after suffering "significant" injuries in a snowmobile crash in northern St. Louis County on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that the crash happened just after 3 p.m. in Beatty Township, north of Cook. Hollis Fritts Jr. was traveling west on the Arrowhead Trail near the
2100 block of Vermilion Drive when he reportedly saw two eastbound snowmobiles coming around a corner in the middle of the trail, at a high rate of speed.
Fritts swerved to the right to avoid a crash and hit a snowbank; he was ejected from the snowmobile and hit a tree. Fritts was transported by ambulance to Cook Hospital and later was transferred to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon.
