An empty train car derailed Friday afternoon, knocking down a power line on Mill Road in north Grand Forks.

At about 1:45 p.m., the empty tank car derailed but remained upright, said Amy McBeth, BNSF spokeswoman.

No one was injured, said Capt. Ron Grande, of the Grand Forks Fire Department.

One Xcel Energy commercial customer lost power and still didn’t have power as of 5 p.m., said Judi Paukert, Xcel Energy spokeswoman. “The restoration time depends on the railroad,” she said.

BNSF crews are working to place the train car back on the track, McBeth said. Traffic was blocked off on Mill Road as the crews worked, Grande said.

BNSF’s main line traffic wasn’t affected because the car went down on a side track, known as an industry line, McBeth said. “It was a minor incident,” she said.
