EGF evicts one mall tenant

Jack's Shoes soon will get an eviction notice from the owner of the Riverwalk Centre mall and the city of East Grand Forks. Owner Jack Leedahl is behind on rent and has not agreed to a payment plan proposed by the city, thus triggering the eviction.

Jack's Shoes soon will get an eviction notice from the owner of the Riverwalk Centre mall and the city of East Grand Forks.

Owner Jack Leedahl is behind on rent and has not agreed to a payment plan proposed by the city, thus triggering the eviction.

This would be one of the few times the city has evicted any tenant since it bought the mall in 1998, even though many tenants have failed to pay rent on time for years. Recently, though, city leaders under fire gave the authority to city administrator Bob Brooks to get tough with the tenants.

Most have responded by either paying up or agreeing to a payment plan. A few tenants were never delinquent.

In the past, the city had feared that evicting tenants would leave the mall dark, worsening its already dismal performance. Now, the city is looking at a big, new tenant - the River Cinema 12 - and has hired a consultant to turn the mall around.
