The campground at the Red River State Recreation Area in East Grand Forks will reopen May 13, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday.

The campground at the Red River State Recreation Area in East Grand Forks will reopen May 13, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday.

Spring flooding has delayed the campground's opening this year, requiring extra cleanup, according to Gladwin Lynne, park manager.

"Fortunately, the park didn't sustain major damage," Lynne said, adding the recreation area was designed to withstand high water and frequent flood events.

Anticipated opening dates include:

- May 13 for the park's 85 full-service campsites. (The 17 rustic sites at Sherlock Park Campground may be open sooner than that, but campers should call ahead to check on availability.)

- May 21 for the River Heights Trailhead, which contains three picnic shelters (two of which can be reserved), and a modern restroom

- Mid- to late May for the Red Lake River public water access, which is under water.

As the floodwaters recede, work crews will be picking up refuse, removing logs and other debris, replacing electrical structures and readying the campground, boat access and picnic area.
