Firefighters put out a small blaze today that caused about $2,000 in damage to an East Grand Forks apartment.

Firefighter Jim Weber said the fire started in a crawlspace beneath the ground-floor apartment. A woman in the apartment noticed smoke coming from the crawlspace and called 911 at about 11:45 a.m., Weber said.

The woman and a child got out of the apartment safely, and East Grand Forks police evacuated the rest of the building, which is part of Brentwood Estates apartments at 400 17th St. N.W., Weber said.

Weber said the fire charred one or two trusses beneath the apartment floor.

"It didn't burn through the carpet or nothing. We caught it in time," he said.

He said the residents of the affected unit, who authorities would not identify, will be displaced for "a day or so" while repairs are made.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
