UND's Energy and Environmental Research Center has formed a partnership with a German university playing a leading role in clean coal energy, the research center said Tuesday.
Technical University Bergakedamie Freiberg, in the southeastern city of Freiberg, is working to commercialize a power plant that converts coal and biomass into a gas before burning the gas.
Carsten Heide, EERC's associate director in charge of commercialization, said the technology is promising because it could result in power plants that have "near-zero emission."
The EERC has conducted research into the gasification of coal and biomass.
