Education notes: UMC to celebrate lantern new year

To commemorate the close of the Chinese New Year celebration, University of Minnesota-Crookston has a full day of events planned as part of the Lantern New Year Celebration Saturday.

Activities begin at 2 p.m. with workshops in the Bede Ballroom. The first workshop is “Paper Cutting and Lantern Making,” followed by “A History of the New Year” at 3 p.m. and “Chinese Language and Writing” at 4 p.m. Dinner will be served in the Brown Dining Room at 5 p.m.

The Chinese American Association of Minnesota’s Chinese Dance Theater will conclude the day with a performance at 6:30 p.m. in the Kiehle Auditorium. Children from the Crookston, Fisher, Thief River Falls, Moorhead and Lengby, Minn., areas will join students from UMC and the dance theater for several dances.

Tickets include all activities and are $15 for adults and $10 students. They can be purchased in advance by calling Rae French at (218) 281-8339 or at the door on the day of the event.

  •   The Elaine McKenzie Memorial Lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in the North Dakota Museum of Art. The featured speaker is Karen Hansen, a professor of sociology and women’s and gender studies at Brandeis University. She will discuss her latest book “Encounter on the Great Plains: Scandinavian Settlers and the Dispossession of Dakota Indians, 1890-1930” with a book signing to follow.
  •   The UND College of Education and Human Development is celebrating International Day starting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Education Building Room 7. The sessions are a chance for students and the community to learn more about international scholarly work happening within the college.   •   UMC’s annual International Dinners Series has announced its schedule for this spring. The series starts on March 3 with “Living Tropical in the Caribbean” and continues March 10 with “Japan and its Traditions” and March 24 with “The Smile of Africa.” The series concludes April 2 with an international dinner hosted by the International Multicultural Club featuring a number of talent showcases, demonstrations, table displays and entertainment from around the world. All dinners start at 6 p.m. in the Bede Ballroom. Tickets are $15 for adults or $50 for the series and $10 for children 13 and younger or $35 for the series.   •   The UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting children in Grades 5 and 6 to participate in “Science Day” April 5. The free event features hands-on learning experiences designed to stimulate children’s interest in science.   •   Mayville (N.D.) State University will host a free workshop about enhancing student engagement at 4 p.m. Thursday in the MSU Classroom Building Auditorium. Workshop presenters Matt Skoy and Steve Winfrey will discuss their current findings and share the various components of the new instructional engagement model called “The Direct Coaching Model.” They will present an additional workshop for MSU students from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium about “Becoming an Indispensable Leader.”
  •   The UMC Clean Water for Everyone Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the UMC Bede Ballroom. Tickets are $25 to help raise funds for the Clean Water for Everyone project, which has provided clean drinking water and sanitation for communities in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Nepal and Nigeria.   •   The third UMC gardening and local foods seminar is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday in the Bede Ballroom. The program will focus on “Visions of Gardening in the Community” by Kirsten Fagerlund and Shannon Stassen.
  •   UND President Robert Kelley will make an appearance in the Fire Hall Theatre’s latest production, “Dearly Departed.” He’ll be one of several local celebrities to play the role of Uncle Bud, including the mayors of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Kelley will be on March 1. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. except for Sunday, which is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors, students and military personnel with ID.
  •   UND Professor Timothy Pasch will present “Marrying Qualtrics and Social Media” at the Qualtrics Insight Summit in Salt Lake City this week. Qualtrics is a survey technology provider that helps give businesses and universities real-time insights into their operations. The conference will feature Qualtrics developers, researchers and members of the digital research community.
  •   The Kupchella Preventative Medicine and Wellness Awards are now seeking nominations of individuals and organizations in North Dakota and surrounding states who have contributed significantly to disease prevention and healthful living.
