Four men were arrested Thursday in East Grand Forks on suspicion they fired a gun or guns at a house.

About 3:30 p.m., Thursday, a woman in a residential neighborhood in the northeast part of the city called police, reporting she saw a van with several young men who shot at a house from the van with "a long gun," according to a news release today from the East Grand Forks Police Department.

Police quickly found and stopped the van near where the caller saw it. Officers could see guns in the van and the four men were taken into custody on possible charges including unlawful discharge of a firearm and possessing illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as stolen property. Two BB guns and two .22 caliber rifles were found in the van, according to police.

From interviews with the men - three are from Grand Forks, one is from East Grand Forks - and other investigations, police said they learned that on Wednesday, the men had stolen and damaged property in Pembina, N.D., and St. Vincent, Minn., which is across the Red River from Pembina next to the Canadian border.

Police are assisting law enforcement agencies in those jurisdictions with possible crimes there.

Two of the men were released pending possible charges and two remain in the tri-county jail in Crookston and are expected to appear on charges Monday in Minnesota district court, a police spokesman said.

Police did not release the men's names until charges are formally filed.
