An East Grand Forks native has been appointed the acting U.S. marshal for North Dakota.
Daniel Orr, a law enforcement veteran of 31 years, was appointed to the position Friday by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to a news release. Orr took the oath for the office and will serve as the acting marshal until the U.S. Senate approves President Donald Trump's nominatee.
Orr graduated from UND in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in public administration before serving as a patrol officer with the Grand Forks Police Department for six years. He then joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 1992 and was promoted in 2010 to chief deputy of the U.S. Marshal's North Dakota District, a position he held until his recent appointment.
"I have been blessed throughout my career in the United States Marshals Service to have served with many talented and dedicated employees, and the operational deputies and administrative employees here in the District of North Dakota are among the best in our nation," he said in a statement. "Each day, they quietly go about their important work ensuring our federal courts can operate smoothly in a safe environment, and completing our many other missions. I am grateful and privileged to have this opportunity to lead them."
