BISMARCK – A week before Election Day, more than 40,000 North Dakotans have already voted through absentee ballots, vote-by-mail ballots and at early voting centers, Secretary of State Al Jaeger said Tuesday.

Jaeger said 40,599 ballots had been cast as of Monday night.

For comparison, 240,876 ballots were cast in the November 2010 midterm election and 352,862 in the November 2012 presidential election.

Of the ballots returned so far, 18,068 were absentee ballots and 19,695 were vote-by-mail ballots. Early voting turnout was 2,836, but Jaeger noted that many early voting centers are opening this week, so the number of ballots cast will increase during the final week before next Tuesday’s election.
