A fire at a Grand Forks duplex Wednesday evening displaced at least five residents for the night and caused up to $50,000 in damage, Battalion Chief Rod Hadland said.

Five firetrucks responded shortly before 5 p.m. to the blaze at Chestnut Street and 23rd Avenue South.

Firefighters doused the flames that had burned through the structure. The blaze created clouds of smoke that were seen more than a block away.

"It was going pretty darn good -- a lot of open burning on the west side," Hadland said.

The fire charred a garage that sits between the two units, and the attic space of the one-story duplex also burned. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Hadland said residents inside one unit got out safely, while the other unit was empty when the fire started.

With the duplex deemed uninhabitable, the Red Cross was called to assist the displaced residents.
