A Dunseith, N.D., man was sentenced Monday in federal court to 30 years in prison and five years of supervised release on voluntary manslaughter and child abuse charges, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney's office.

The release says James Haggerty, 25, was charged with voluntary manslaughter for throwing his 3-month-old against a wall, causing injuries that killed the child March 19. Haggerty was charged with child abuse for injuring his 2-year-old by striking and throwing the child from September 2008 to March 19, the release states.

Haggerty pleaded guilty to the charges Sept. 15. The FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case.
