A "Rally Against the Darkness" kicked off Wednesday night at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks to help the community fight addiction.

The rally, which aims to offer hope and support to those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, will continue through Friday. It is staged by Grand Cities Aglow International, the local chapter of the non-denominational Christian organization.

The rally is in response to growing opioid abuse, but is not specific to one drug and encompasses all addictions, said Cary-Sue Hendrickson, former president of Grand Cities Aglow and an organizer of the rally.

The rally starts at 6:30 p.m. and lasts for about three hours each night, featuring a new message each day.

Ex-convict and former heroin and alcohol addict Bill Davis, will be the keynote speaker each night, offering his story as inspiration to struggling addicts. Josh Myhrer, a former drug and alcohol addict from Strandquist, Minn., will speak on Friday night.

Hendrickson said the rally aims to educate people on how to stay connected and find help in the community.

"I want people to get that freedom from drug addiction, control their issues, and families to be healed," she said.

Bill Davis speaks about his past struggle with addiction and how he was redeemed and freed from his addiction.
